Watercolors and Graphics from Private European Collections

May 17 - July 23, 1995

EMIL NOLDE WAS, QUITE SIMPLY, one of the great German artists of the 20th century. This was one of a number of shows I did in conjunction with another gallery, in this case the Michael Beck gallery out of Leipzig, Germany. Congratulations to Michael Beck for a fine catalog, and one of the finest shows I have ever had at the gallery. It was not a show you see often in SOHO anymore. -JOHN-

EMIL NOLDEВ’S PICTORIAL CREATIVITY began with drawing, with watercolors, and with these he also concluded in the mid-fifties.  His painting with watercolors stands equal in rank and value to the rest of his work and was from time to time  especially in the dark phase of his painting prohibition and in the last years of his life  his sole means of expression.  The controversy which budded early around the reputed merits of the painter of watercolor and graphic artist has continued to this very day. 1
